چکیده

Malacinski, George (Indiana University, Bloomington), and Walter A. Konetzka. Bacterial oxidation of orthophosphite. J. Bacteriol. 91:578-582. 1966.-A variety of bacteria grown on a glucose and salts medium were capable of utilizing orthophosphite as a sole source of phosphorus. Two organisms, Pseudomonas fluorescens 195 and Serratia marcescens 24, were studied in detail. Growth rates and total cell yields of the bacteria grown on phosphite indicated that the bacteria utilized phosphite as efficiently as phosphate. The ability to oxidize the anion was shown to be inducible. A period of adaptation was required prior to growth on phosphite when phosphate-grown cells were transferred to a medium containing a limiting amount of phosphate and excess phosphite. No phosphite-oxidizing activity could be detected in whole cells or cell-free extracts of phosphate-grown cells. Both whole cells and cell-free extracts of phosphite-grown cells possessed phosphite-oxidizing activity.

The oxidation of thiosulfate and phosphorylation in extracts of Thiobacillus thioparus.

Thiobmillus thioparus is an autotrophic microorganism that obtains the energy required for growth by the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds to sulfate. When it is grown on high concentrations of thiosulfate, the organism accumulates elemental sulfur and produces sulfate. The pathway of thiosulfate oxidation has been essentially unknown; however, it has been postulated that tetrathi...

01” Studies on the Mechanism of Sulfate Formation and Phosphorylation in Extracts of Thiobadlus thioparus

The chemoautotropic microorganism Thiobacillus thioparus requires orthophosphate or arsenate for the complete oxidation of thiosulfate to sulfate (1). This observation has been further extended by Santer (2), who observed that during the oxidation of thiosulfate by intact cells of this organism, 0’8 is transferred from orthophosphate to the sulfate formed during the oxidation. This transfer was...

Multi-pumping flow system for the determination of dissolved orthophosphate and dissolved organic phosphorus in wastewater samples.

A multi-pumping flow system (MPFS) for the spectrophotometric determination of dissolved orthophosphate and dissolved organic phosphorus in wastewater samples is proposed. The determination of orthophosphate is based on the vanadomolybdate method. In-line ultraviolet photo-oxidation is employed to mineralise organic phosphorus to orthophosphate prior to detection. A solenoid valve allows the de...

Assessment of effective factors on bacterial oxidation of ferrous iron by focusing on sweetening natural gas

In this study, the effects of some factors on bacterial growth and ferrous oxidation rates were investigated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidan in 250 ml shake flasks. One factor at a time (OFAT) design approach was used for preliminary evaluation of various factors affecting the process, such as pH, initial ferrous and elemental sulfur concentrations, shaker agitation rate, and liquid to flask v...

Demonstration of a requirement of high energy phosphate for the aerobic oxidation of succinate in liver mitochondria.

It was concluded in a previous paper (1) that the enhancement of respiration by inorganic orthophosphate, occurring in rat liver mitochondria oxidizing a number of Krebs cycle metabolites or glutamate in the presence of 2,4-dinitrophenol or Dicumarol, is due to the substrate level phosphorylation linked to the oxidation of a-ketoglutarate which is not uncoupled by these agents. Yet, no requirem...
